Welcome to the second “Members Giving Back” post of 2015, where we are featuring some of the wonderful work being done by members at the Trilogy communities. There are so many worthwhile projects either wrapping up, in full swing, or on the horizon for the Trilogy members, that this edition was split into two articles, you can find the first post, here.

Read on to discover what causes Trilogy community members are volunteering their time for, and possibly discover a volunteer effort you would like to become a part of.

Providing Summer Sustenance

Contributed by Amy Hedges of Trilogy at Monarch Dunes

The SLO Food Bank is partnering with the Trilogy Service Club at Trilogy at Monarch Dunes once again this year to help feed children while school is out for the summer. This is the second year the food bank has partnered with the organization and all Trilogy at Monarch Dunes members are welcome to take part by volunteering during the summer months for a few hours a day by driving to pick up the lunches or, if you’re extra-handy, to help build some picnic tables from wood donated from local businesses.

Trilogy Tutors Support Local Learners

Contributed by Alan McAlister of Trilogy at Vistancia

Alan McAlister has been volunteering his time for about a year to help tutor children in the City of Phoenix. Currently, there are three Trilogy at Monarch Dunes volunteers that go to Montebello School in the Alhambra School District to help tutor third grade students. While no experience is needed, volunteers with patience, flexibility and a desire to help children are wanted!

Raising Our Voices to Raise Their Spirits

Contributed by Marlene Weiss of Trilogy Orlando

With the main objective to help with the entertainment in the community, whether it be on site or off site – and to have a great time doing it – the The Voices of Trilogy chorus is always looking for new members. Started as an a cappella group, the chorus quickly grew in capabilities. Now the group brings its talents to assisted living facilities with the goal of raising spirits through the love of music.

Between performances offsite, the group helps support itself and other clubs through fundraising efforts so they can continue to give back to the local community.

Guild Work – Satisfying Volunteerism

Contributed by Lyle Hanson of Trilogy at Redmond Ridge

A guild is a group of people working toward the pursuit of a common goal. At Trilogy at Redmond Ridge, the guild is a group of people who have joined together to support Seattle Children’s Hospital and improve the health and well-being of kids. There are 450 guilds and 6,200 guild members across Washington State. Guild members are men, women and children of all ages. In fiscal year 2012, guilds raised $10.6 million for Children’s Hospital by hosting events ranging from auctions and wine tastings to fun runs and golf tournaments.

Each guild is different; some raise several hundred dollars each year, while others raise tens of thousands and more. Guilds also meet significant needs through “heartwarming projects” – the collection or creation of items such as blankets, toys, books and toiletries to support and comfort patients and their families. Each year, guilds donate thousands of heartwarming items.

There are many reasons to join one of Seattle Children’s Hospital Guilds. A few are: retired teachers who wish to keep on helping kids, but in a different way; special interests; i.e., vintage car racing enthusiasts – a guild called SOVREN Guild (Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts); using one’s spare time in a productive manner; or, experiencing one’s own child receiving life-saving care from Children’s Hospital.

Trilogy members Lyle Hanson and his wife, Marie, belong to the latter grateful group, giving back to the hospital and staff that saved their first-born daughter’s life in 1962. After moving to Trilogy in 2006, the couple joined their second guild, now called The Pat Harris Guild of Trilogy (named after its deceased founder, Pat Harris).

The Pat Harris Guild of Trilogy recently received thanks from the Children’s Hospital Guild Association, reporting that from 10/13/13 – 9/30/14 the Guild donated a grand total of $33,438 and members worked 1,266 volunteer hours.

Thank you to all of the Trilogy members who reached out and requested to be part of the “Members Giving Back” series.
